Waterloo launches energy management plan in January of 2008

The City of Waterloo spent approximately $3 million in 2007 on utility costs. As energy costs continue to rise, the development of an energy management program is necessary to address the environmental, social and regulatory changes taking place. The City of Waterloo is committed to showcasing leadership in reducing energy costs and implementing energy efficient measures in a systematic fashion where cost-effective within City facilities.

In January 2008, the City of Waterloo approved an Energy Management Program and set a goal to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by 30% from its 2004 levels within two years of implementation.

In addition to the energy management plan, other energy efficiency programs and initiatives exist at the City of Waterloo including: Training and Awareness, the Mayor Megawatt ChallengeWaterloo Memorial Recreation Complex Energy Audit, the Arenas Collaborative Project,  LEED certificationthe Sustainable Communities – Archetypes, the Voluntary Blackout DayEarth Hour and the EcoActions Team.
