Parking is Prohibited on Residential Yards

On February 18, 2010, the City of Waterloo passed by-law 2010-049 prohibiting individuals from parking vehicles on residential yards within the City of Waterloo.   The fine for parking a vehicle on an illegally widened driveway, front or back yard or any organic ground cover area on a residential property is $75.

With this new by-law, when a complaint is received or a violation is noticed about a vehicle parked on a yard space, a by-law enforcement officer will simply issue a ticket to the license plate displayed on the vehicle in violation, similar to an on-street parking violation.

This is a change in the process from the past.  In the past, when a complaint was received, officers would visit the property, investigate the complaint, and issue a notice to the vehicle owner that the vehicle is in violation and must be moved.  If the vehicle was not moved, the vehicle owner or property owner would either be served with a Provincial Offences Notice or a summons to attend court regarding the issue.  The process was time-consuming and costly.  Under the new by-law, the process will be streamlined and more effectively deal with these offences.
