(Waterloo, ON – May 21, 2009) After years of planning and anticipation, the Waterloo Public Square will open “officially” during an exciting ceremony on May 30 from noon to 5 p.m.
Participants will enjoy an interactive marketplace with demonstrations and sales by a variety of heritage-based artisans, including tinsmiths, weavers, a wood carver and more.
“Come on out – the afternoon will be unforgettable for everyone who attends,” said Tracy Suerich, the square’s programmer. “In addition to celebrating this new public space in the heart of Waterloo, the opening ceremony is also a chance to reflect upon our heritage in light of the city’s 152nd birthday.”
The new square – located on King Street in front of the Shops at Waterloo Town Square – will come alive that day with performances by the Waterloo Concert Band and other local musicians between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. And Mayor Brenda Halloran will be on hand to deliver a speech.
“I encourage everyone in Waterloo to attend this historic event. This is only the beginning for the square, a place where generations to come will gather and celebrate,” Halloran said.
Suerich added she’s thrilled with the addition of six honey locust trees to the square. They were purchased through generous donations from 10,000 Trees Project, the Consulting Engineers of Ontario and the Grand River Chapter of Consulting Engineers of Ontario.
“These trees bring a natural feeling to the square, and will provide some needed shade for the people and families who will frequent it,” she said.
The fun at the square doesn’t end with the opening ceremonies. Information about the dynamic programming that will take place there year-round is posted on the city’s website – at www.waterloo.ca– as it becomes available.
