Youth Leadership Development Program

The City of Waterloo is committed to encouraging and enhancing youth leadership skills that relate to the camp leader role. Participants in the youth leadership development program will also benefit from learning such transferable skills as organizational skills, leadership, teamwork, program planning and communication.

Cost: $205.86

New for 2017: There are two sessions this year for the Youth Leadership Development Program (YLDP). You will have the option of one of two training weeks at the beginning of the summer and then volunteer the remaining weeks of the summer. Please note: We have several items to consider when placing volunteers at camp sites and we may not be able to accommodate your first request.

Program dates: new this year

Session one training: July 4 to July 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Session two training: July 11 to July 14 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Volunteering: all participants must volunteer for two weeks at one of our camp locations and 100 per cent attendance is required.

Location: RIM Park's Manulife Financial Sportsplex. 2001 University Avenue East.

Eligibility: participants must be 13 years old by Aug. 31, 2017. Training is mandatory for all camp volunteers. We combine training for beginners and returning volunteers who share their experiences and take a leadership role throughout the week. This program consists of two components: a 28 hour leadership training course and two weeks of placement in our camps. Please see the changes listed above regarding volunteer week choices.

Frequently asked questions

Q. How old do you have to be to register?

A. Participants must be 13 to 16 years old and must be 13 years old by Aug. 31, 2017.

Q. Are the training dates mandatory?

A. Yes, the training dates are mandatory. You must attend 100 per cent of the course.

Q. How are volunteer placements at the camp determined?

A. On your placement request form, you can rank your preference for weeks only. The youth leadership coordinator will arrange placements based on your requests as well as the availability of spots during a particular week. Please note that due to the number of YLDP participants we cannot always accommodate your first or second request and flexibility is appreciated. Please note that Evolve Skateboard camp is delivered by Evolve and you will not be able to volunteer for these weeks of camp.

Participants who are 13 years old may only volunteer at summer fun centres, while those who are 14 to 16 years old may request to volunteer at any of the day camps or fun centres.

Q. Does my youth need a police reference check? 

A. No we have determined that we do not require the youth to get a police reference check for this program.

Q. What are the hours of volunteering - can my Youth do a 1/2 day?

A. Volunteering hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (if program requires we may shift this time earlier or later). All YLDP participants are required to put in two full week - working full days. We do have half hour breaks scheduled for all volunteers.
