Light rail transit station planning

The Region of Waterloo is constructing a light rail transit (LRT) system that will link the cities of Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge. For LRT construction updates, please visit the Region of Waterloo's website.

The City of Waterloo's involvement in the project is to lead the planning of station areas in Waterloo and the impact on nearby residents. For detailed background on the City of Waterloo's station area planning process, click here.

On June 26, 2017, a Formal Public Meeting was held on the final proposed Station Area Plans and implementing Official Plan Amendment. Council adopted the Official Plan Amendment and endorsed the Station Area Plans. See below for more information.

 The Official Plan Amendment is being reviewed by the Region of Waterloo for approval. Approval is anticipated by the end of year, 2017.

The City is now working on the final  proposed Zoning By-law Amendment for this work. Stay tuned!

A public open house was held on Thursday, May 12 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, Hauser Haus (101 Father David Bauer Dr, Waterloo). 

What is station area planning?

Station planning is the process of evaluating lands surrounding stations in to maximize the potential of the LRT system. A station area plan establishes a strategy for achieving transit-supportive neighbourhoods.

Aug. 10, 2015 report to council

On Aug. 10 a staff and consultant report was received by council. This report summarized the main themes from the April and June consultation events, and identified future milestones.

June 16, 2015 - stakeholder workshop and open house

A day-long stakeholder workshop and evening public open house workshop were held on June 16, 2015 at Luther Village (139 Father David Bauer Dr. Waterloo). A lot of great input was received at both sessions, all of which will be considered in current and future milestones. Thanks Waterloo!
