City closures and program pauses in modified Step 2

Posted On Tuesday January 04, 2022

With the government of Ontario moving the province to a modified version of Step Two of the Roadmap to Reopen as of Wednesday, January 5, 2022, there are several changes to city programs. These changes will be in effect for at least 21 days (until January 26, 2022) or until further notice, subject to trends in public health and health system indicators.

Effective end of day Tuesday, City of Waterloo recreation facilities will be closed, and indoor city recreation programming will be paused until further notice. Facility rentals, swimming lessons and leadership courses, drop-in aquatics, fitness programs and CARL activities will be paused, while current virtual programming will continue as scheduled. Changes to winter programming moving forward (including cancellation, postponement or a pivot to virtual programming) will be shared on the city website once available. No new facility rentals will be accepted until further notice.

Please also note the following adjustments:

  • Social gathering limits will be five people indoors and ten people outdoors.
  • The rink in Waterloo Public Square remains open, with face coverings and physical distancing required.
  • Access to Waterloo Sports Medicine at RIM Park will remain available for patients.
  • Waterloo Public Libraries will remain open, with capacity limits and public health protocols in place.
  • The City of Waterloo Museum at Conestoga Mall will be closed.
  • City wedding and funeral services remain by appointment only, with restrictions in place and a waitlist for those interested in future funeral planning.
  • Residents are encouraged to manage their city business through our website wherever possible, and to make an appointment for limited access in-person business.

We thank everyone for their patience and understanding as staff work to adapt winter programming. For the most up to date information, please refer to the city’s COVID-19 response page.
