Waterloo’s leaf collection program begins November 2

Posted On Tuesday October 06, 2020

Waterloo residents have three options for leaf collection: bag leaves for the Region of Waterloo's biweekly yard waste collection, mulch the leaves and let them remain on the property, or rake the leaves to the curb for the City of Waterloo’s leaf collection.

Waterloo’s leaf collection is for the trees on your boulevard only. This service begins Monday, Nov. 2 and weather permitting, will run until the week of Nov. 23, ending Nov. 28.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 2, leaf collection crews will visit areas with younger trees first, followed by the areas with more mature trees. The estimated collection schedule is as follows:

  • November 2 to November 7: zones W6, W8, E8, E7
  • November 9 to 14: zones W7, W1, E6, E5
  • November 16 to 21: zones W3, W4, E3, E4
  • November 23 to 28: zones W2, W5, E1, E2

On the first day, or a day or two before the estimated collection date, residents are encouraged to rake leaves from the tree(s) on the boulevard only to the curb by 7:00 a.m.

    1. Do not rake leaves into bike lanes. If you have a bike lane in front of your property, rake the leaves to the edge of your property before it hits the bike lane
    2. If you do not have a bike lane in front of your property, rake the leaves onto the road as close to the curb as possible

Keeping bike lanes clear of leaves as much as possible will help ensure our cyclists can travel safely throughout the city.

Leaf collection crews will visit each zone only once – we cannot accommodate repeat visits. Residents can receive updates/changes to collection schedules as follows:

Residents who miss their collection date are encouraged to consider the following options:

  • Bag leaves as per the Region of Waterloo's biweekly yard waste collection program. This service ends November 27.
  • Add leaves to home composters or mulch them into the lawn by waiting until they are dry and mowing the lawn frequently.
  • Deliver leaves to the Waterloo Landfill, at 925 Erb St., for composting. For details, go to region.waterloo.on.ca/waste or call 519-883-5100.

Here are some important leaf collection and safety tips for residents:

  • Rake leaves to the boulevard if you live on a regional road
  • Don’t mix rocks, sticks, branches or other debris with leaves
  • Don’t place leaves over storm grates as this can cause flooding
  • Don’t place leaves on cul-de-sac or boulevard islands
  • Don’t park cars over leaf piles
  • Don’t let children play in leaf piles
