State of the City 2024

Posted On Thursday May 02, 2024

Mayor McCabe, on behalf of Waterloo City Council, delivered the 2024 State of the City address on the morning of Thursday, May 2, 2024.

Reflecting on her first full year in office as a ‘true adventure of growth’, Mayor McCabe celebrated the city’s strides towards its vision of being a future-ready community and the actions taken to prioritize climate action, transportation and housing.

In her remarks, Mayor McCabe highlighted Council’s historic decision to convert city-owned lands at 2025 University Avenue East to support up to 700 new affordable and attainable units.

“This ambitious plan is an opportunity for the City to take a large parcel of municipally-owned land and transform it into the affordable and attainable housing Waterloo residents need," said Mayor McCabe. "Council’s decision is significant for families, first time home buyers, seniors, new Canadians - for our entire community."

The Mayor invited community members to learn more and share their thoughts at a public meeting on May 8.

Through creative and inspiring videos, eight Waterloo students, the winners of the Council for a Day contest, also had the opportunity to showcase their winning ideas for improving life in Waterloo.
