2024 Ontario Bike Summit celebrates 15th anniversary in Waterloo where it all started
The City of Waterloo is pleased to announce it will be hosting the 15th annual Ontario Bike Summit this spring from April 3-5, 2024. This year’s event provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate cycling progress in the province and in Waterloo where the first Bike Summit launched in 2009.
“We are thrilled to have the Ontario Bike Summit back in Waterloo where it all began 15 years ago,” said City of Waterloo Mayor and avid cyclist Dorothy McCabe. “We’re proud of the fact that all paths lead back to Waterloo where ideas and input for the Ontario Cycling Strategy were born.”
The event is expected to draw 250 delegates, including municipal staff and leaders from across Canada and internationally, to share ideas, best practices and opportunities for progress in cycling. This year’s Bike Summit theme explores ‘Sustainability and Innovation through Cycling’. The event is organized by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, a province-wide cycling policy and advocacy organization based in Hamilton.
“The Summit is unique in Canada; it’s an important advocacy platform and opportunity to share best practices and innovation amongst cycling policy and decision makers,” said Ed McMahon, Chair, Share the Road Cycling Coalition. “We’re delighted Waterloo is hosting the 15th annual Summit, particularly given their role in inspiring change and progress in Ontario cycling. We look forward to the city’s discussion on progress to date – showcasing innovative ways for municipalities to continue the path to progress.”
The City of Waterloo maintains over 230 km of trails, bike lanes and signed bike routes. The city works with the Region of Waterloo toward a fully connected, accessible transportation network that is safe for cyclists.
Waterloo is proud to be the first mid-sized city in Ontario recognized as a Gold Bicycle Friendly Community by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition in 2018. Our Transportation Master Plan and active transportation committee help us to work toward a sustainable transportation system.
