Lumen Lite shines bright in uptown Waterloo in 2021

Posted On Wednesday September 15, 2021

City of Waterloo is pleased to announce the return of LUMEN Lite, an adapted version of the annual festival of light, art & tech, with COVID-19 protocols put in place. Residents and community members are invited to enjoy this free festival in uptown Waterloo and get thinking about our community’s public spaces and how they transform our shared experiences.

The festival will take place in various outdoor locations throughout uptown Waterloo on September 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. LUMEN Lite will feature 15+ visual, interactive and participatory installations and activities that will illuminate the urban space and engage audiences.

Although the festival moved online last year, this year’s festival will return to its original in-person format. To keep participants safe, the City of Waterloo is working closely with the Region of Waterloo’s Public Health team to ensure the event follows public safety protocols and procedures. Installations will still be interactive, but in new, contact-less ways, with physical-distancing measures at each location. Community members are also encouraged to stay no longer than 10-15 minutes at each installation and face masks are required for participation.

“We are very excited to be able to welcome participants back to public spaces. This year’s LUMEN Lite artists have truly demonstrated their creativity and artistic talent by creating pieces that will get the community to think about these spaces in new ways,” said Mayor Dave Jaworsky. “Producing LUMEN Lite lets us support our talented artists and also create an opportunity for the community to come together in a safe, outdoor environment.”

LUMEN Lite is delivered by Create Waterloo, the City of Waterloo’s arts and culture unit. The festival is supported by a wide range of sponsors, partners, collaborators, artists, organizations and volunteers.
