The City of Waterloo is proud to participate in the Healthy Kids Community Challenge, a region-wide initiative that promotes the health of children and their caregivers through physical activity and healthy eating.
Waterloo Region is one of 45 communities across Ontario taking part in this challenge. The program is funded for three years by the Province of Ontario and delivered as a partnership through all seven municipalities in Waterloo Region.
Over the course of the four-year program, four different themes will be presented.
The theme for 2016 is run, jump, play every day! The goal here is to encourage physical activity through a mix of active play, sport, active transportation and unstructured activities. A number of activities were scheduled in our community to promote this theme to residents looking for free and fun ways to take part in the challenge.
The theme for 2016/2017 is water does wonders. The goal here is to promote the health benefits of choosing water over sugary drinks. Residents of all ages will be invited to a number of events and activities to learn more about the importance of drinking water to stay hydrated and healthy.
The theme for 2018 is eat more vegetables and fruits. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to make better decisions around healthy food and beverages for their children.
In 2018, the City of Waterloo will host swim and skate programs to encourage children, their teachers and caregivers to power off and play!
