Code of Conduct

Waterloo city council members are guided by a code of conduct that outlines their conduct at meetings, use of influence and confidential information, among other issues.

It is based on the following key principles:

  • Council members shall serve and be seen to serve their constituents in a conscientious and diligent manner
  • Council members are committed to performing the functions of their office with integrity and to avoiding the improper use of the influence of their office, and conflicts of interest, both real and apparent
  • Council members are expected to perform their duties in office and arrange their private affairs in a manner that promotes public confidence and will bear close public scrutiny
  • Council members shall seek to serve the public interest by upholding both the letter and spirit of the laws of Canada, the province of Ontario and the laws and policies adopted by city council
  • Council members are responsible for making honest statements and shall not make statements which they know to be false or with the intent to mislead other members of the public
