Decks, Sheds and Detached Garages

Two people beside a building under construction

In the City of Waterloo, many structures you build outside on your property require a building permit. These structures are also known as accessory structures, and include sheds, detached garages and decks.

Accessory structures that require a permit:

  • Any structure with plumbing
  • Sheds and detached garages that are larger than 10 square metres (108 square feet)
  • Decks with a roof
  • Decks that are 60 centimetres (24 inches) or more above ground

Even if your project does not require a permit, you should check with our zoning team to make sure your shed or detached garage meets our zoning requirements.

You will need a set of drawings, and the following forms to make an application.
