More about development charges

Municipalities use development charges to recover the growth-related capital costs that are needed to service new development. Information about how the City of Waterloo determines our rates is available in our 2017 development charges background study

Watch a brief video for more information on development charges:

Development charges payments are due when a building permit is issued. Rates are adjusted as of Jan. 1 each year. Please check here or contact our building standards team for year-end submission due dates by structure type to ensure you receive the correct rate. You must get completed building permit applications to the city by the deadline to be eligible for this rate.
