Project background

This project supports the vision of the recreation and leisure services master plan approved by council in November 2008, which recognizes a demand for new facility space as the city’s population continues to grow and new trends in recreation activities emerge.

We are building:

  • a new civic front on the east side of the building that will include an activity court/gymnasium, additional lobby space, change rooms, inclusive washrooms
  • a renovated Hauser Haus to allow for additional fitness programming in two exercise studios and a secondary indoor walking concourse
  • a new two-storey building - the Community Pavilion - on the west-side of the property as the new home for the city’s older adult recreation program previously offered at the Adult Recreation Centre (ARC) and Wing 404 RCAFA Rotary Adult Centre. The building will connect to the WMRC facility with an elevated pedestrian bridge

Construction updates

The Community Pavilion, civic front and Hauser Fitness Core are ready to be occupied and we are excited to start welcoming the community into these new spaces.

Overall, the project is on track and nearing completion. Expect to see ongoing construction activities within and around the property as final work is completed. Landscaping and paving will be completed this spring.

The following construction activity is underway:

Community Pavilion
  • kitchen and administrative offices are complete and senior programming has started
  • audio visual system equipment is on back order but expected to be installed in early summer
Civic front:
  • minor exterior work along with the roof and solar array are expected to be complete in early spring
  • Civic Front Café is scheduled to open in May 2022
Hauser Fitness Core:
  • video wall is expected to be installed in the early Summer after chip shortages caused delays
Aquatic change rooms:
  • completed and in use
  • some minor work will continue in the coming months
Customer service kiosk
  • install is scheduled to be completed by May 2022

Throughout the construction process, we will update you on parking, programming and other changes. Bookmark this page or check Facebook and Twitter for ongoing updates.

We will also post updates through other communication channels, such as e-newsletters.

Impacts to local residents

  • as the project nears completion and only minimal site works are outstanding, construction traffic is now greatly reduced
  • once the Community Pavilion exterior sidewalk and landscape work is complete, the west roadway will fully open
  • construction work will take place Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
  • work may be required outside of these hours - if so, adherence to the noise bylaw will occur, or a variance notice will be given

Construction timelines

The WMRC expansion project has a 24 month construction schedule. Throughout the 24 months, the community will continue to see construction activities as well as construction equipment in and around the site.

Completion dates:

  • total completion of project: Summer 2022
