Statement from Mayor McCabe on the passing of former Councillor Morty Taylor
It is with great sadness I learned about the passing of former City Councillor Morty Taylor. A dedicated community leader, he served as City Councillor for Ward 4 in Waterloo from 1991 to 1997 and 2000 to 2003. As a resident of Waterloo for over 60 years, Morty was also very well known in our city as the friendly, respected business person who founded Morty's Pub at the corner of King and University in 1981.
His commitment to our city, Ward 4 and the student community extended to serving on the boards of various local organizations, including Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo Library, Oktoberfest Advisory Council, Project Lift, the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, Recreation and Leisure 55 Plus, The Waterloo Student Housing Task Force and The Affordable Housing Task Force.
As a businessman and a member of council, Morty made a significant contribution to the City of Waterloo and will be missed. On behalf of my council colleagues and residents of the city, I extend my condolences to Morty’s family and friends.
Flags at City of Waterloo facilities will be at half-mast in memory of former Councillor Taylor until sunset on November 27, 2023.
Mayor Dorothy McCabe
