Beer Boot Glass around

Around 1780 to 1800

What an odd way to remember an unpopular politician – design a beer glass after him. In 1763, pressure from the public forced Lord Bute to resign after serving less than one year as British Prime Minister. A play on his name Bute, the boot glass remained popular well into the Victorian era. And what is the perfect toast when raising a boot glass? He was “given the boot” of course!
