Postcard, Ontario Equitable Life and Accident Insurance Company, Waterloo, Ontario

Postcard printed by Rumsey and Co. Limited, Toronto around 1920

Long forgotten fact - Waterloo was once home to the most insurance headquarters in Canada. In 1920, Sydney Tweed launched yet another one. The Ontario Equitable Life and Accident Insurance Company began in a 2-room office with a rented typewriter and one other employee. The company grew quickly. Within a few years, the Devitt building at King and Erb Streets became their new headquarters. In 1939, the company name changed, becoming The Equitable Life Insurance of Canada. Equitable Life moved to a state-of-the-art building at 1 Westmount Road North in Waterloo in 1971. In 2020, Equitable Life and its 750 employees commemorated 100 years in business.
