It took a lot of work by local businesses and politicians to convince the government to construct this handsome Romanesque-style structure in 1911. Designed by David Edward, Chief Architect for Canada, the building was home to Waterloo’s post office, the Customs and Inland Revenue office, a recreation room, and living quarters. A fire in 1969 destroyed the clock tower. It was later rebuilt with a shorter tower. The clock tower was restored to its original look in 1987. The historic post office at 35 King Street North remains one of Waterloo’s most grand buildings.
