Waterloo Fire Rescue provides the community with a range of services designed to help keep you safe. Call 911 if you have an emergency - do not wait.
We respond to many types of emergencies:
- Emergency medical incidents
- Car accidents
- Dangerous chemical incidents
We also provide public education, enforce the Ontario Fire Code and investigate the cause of fires, among other services. Our services and mandate are outlined in our establishing and regulating by-law.
Our motto is "shaping our fire safe community," which reflects our philosophy that every member of the community and the Waterloo Fire Rescue team share the responsibility of fire safety and prevention. It is also about our commitment to providing integrated education and prevention services, standards and enforcement, and emergency response.
We can trace the roots of Waterloo Fire Rescue to 1857, when the newly incorporated Village of Waterloo passed a by-law calling for the establishment of "engine" and "hook and ladder" companies. Over the years, we transitioned from horse-drawn fire engines to a modern fleet, and from volunteer firefighters to a full team of professional firefighters after the Second World War.
Today, we respond to 4,500 calls a year, about 60 per cent of which are emergency medical or first-response cases, with an average response time of five minutes.
