Sidewalk snow removal

You must shovel snow and ice from your sidewalks within 24 hours after a snowfall or ice build-up.

Shovel sidewalks within 24 hours

Property owners must keep sidewalks beside their home or business clear of snow and ice within 24 hours after a snowfall or ice build-up. 

It’s part of the Snow Removal Bylaw and helps everyone get around safely. 

You may face a fine for not clearing your sidewalk:

  • first offence – $100 fine plus cleanup costs
  • repeat offences – $400 fine plus cleanup costs

Report an uncleared sidewalk

If a private sidewalk hasn’t been cleared within 24 hours, report it to the city for follow-up.

You’ll need to create an account in our online services portal:

  • enter the address into our online reporting system to notify a bylaw officer immediately
  • the request is tracked and you can view its status
