Attend a committee meeting

Committee meetings are open to the public. Attend in person to learn about local issues or share your views on an agenda item by registering as a delegation.

Volunteer on a committee

Volunteering on a committee is one way residents can help shape city decisions and strengthen Waterloo as a diverse and inclusive community.

Committee members share their knowledge on topics such as:

  • parks and public spaces
  • arts, culture and the local economy
  • sustainability and active transportation

Time commitments vary by committee.

How committees work

Committees bring residents, council members and staff together to discuss community issues and make recommendations.

Types of committees and boards:

  • advisory committees to council – provide advice and recommendations directly to city council
  • statutory committees – required under provincial legislation or city bylaw
  • advisory committees to staff – support city programs or special initiatives
  • inter-agency committees – include representatives from the city and partner organizations
  • boards – external organizations with council representation

Committee code of conduct

All committees follow a formal process that ensures meetings are respectful, inclusive and transparent. 

Committee members are expected to:

  • follow the city’s committee process and code of conduct
  • act with integrity and professionalism
  • respect the role of Council, staff and fellow members

Every committee elects a chair who presides over the public meetings.

City staff support each committee by providing information, circulating agendas and taking minutes.
