Follow fireworks rules to stay safe

To use fireworks legally in Waterloo, you must:

  • only set them off on private property – your own, or with the owner’s permission
  • only use them during approved holidays and hours
  • use only family fireworks such as roman candles, fountains, pinwheels and volcanoes

Do not use fireworks such as Christmas crackers or paper caps.

Report fireworks

Call 519-747-8785 to report fireworks outside approved holidays and times. Please try to give us a specific address.

Officers may not arrive in time to stop the fireworks, but your report helps us track repeat problem areas.

Fireworks fines

If you break the Fireworks Bylaw, officers can fine you:

  • $1,000 for a first offence
  • $2,000 for a second offence

Read the Fireworks Bylaw for more details.

Buying and selling fireworks

Starting January 2026, you cannot buy or sell fireworks in the City of Waterloo. You may still order fireworks online.

Be a good neighbour

Fireworks can disturb pets, young children, shift workers and people sensitive to loud sounds. If planning to use fireworks, notify neighbours in advance so they can prepare.

Protect wildlife and our environment

Avoid setting off fireworks near water systems or in areas where wildlife live, as fireworks contain chemicals that can harm the environment and animals.

Before lighting fireworks:

  • check the wind and how dry the land is
  • avoid setting off fireworks near trees, woodlots, nesting areas or water systems
  • wait until after dusk, when most animals have finished feeding

Clean up any debris afterward.

Use the protected woodlots map to avoid sensitive areas.

Get approval on other days

To use fireworks outside the 4 approved holidays, you must:

  1. apply for a noise exemption
  2. get approval from the city – email municipalenforcement@waterloo.ca
  3. hire a certified fireworks operator for large displays – find certification information on the Ministry of Natural Resources website
