Request needle pick up

If you find a needle in a park, trail or other public space, contact us at 519-886-1550 or sharpscleanup@waterloo.ca. We will coordinate pickup and disposal.

Discard used needles safely

If you choose to dispose of a needle yourself, follow these steps carefully:

  1. Wear gloves – latex, rubber or thick gardening gloves. Gloves protect against fluid contact, not punctures.
  2. Use tongs or pliers to pick up the needle. Clean and disinfect the tool afterward.
  3. Pick up by the plastic syringe end – never try to recap the needle.
  4. Point the tip away from your body – move slowly and carefully.
  5. Use a stable surface – place the disposal container on the ground, not in your hand.
  6. Place the needle point-first into the container – do not force it inside.
  7. If you don’t have a sharps container – use a thick plastic bottle or tin can with a secure lid.
  8. Seal the container tightly.
  9. Drop it off at a disposal bin – do not flush needles or place them in garbage or recycling.
  10. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after removing gloves.
