Check if a rental property is licensed

Under the Rental Housing Bylaw, most rental units in buildings up to 3 storeys need a licence. Larger apartment buildings do not.

You can confirm online if a rental property has a valid licence.


Report unlicensed rental housing

If you think someone is renting without a valid licence, you can:


Meet minimum property standards

Landlords must keep rental units safe and in good repair, including:

  • maintaining heating, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • keeping appliances in working order
  • keeping doors and windows weather-tight and secure
  • repairing water damage and mold

Request an inspection of your unit

If you think your unit is below minimum standards and the landlord is unwilling to fix the problem, you can request an inspection.

You do not need to notify your landlord. We will need access to the unit.

To request an inspection:

We respond within 2 business days. If your unit fails inspection, we can order the owner to make repairs. Owners can appeal within 14 days.
