Find ways to say thanks

Recognition helps volunteers feel valued and supported. Choose an approach that fits your group and budget:

  • give a gift card to a local café, shop or class
  • make a thank-you kit with local goods or treats
  • plan a group outing, such as a dinner, movie or skating
  • send a personal thank you note or card
  • share a post or story on your group’s social media or newsletter
  • nominate a volunteer for an award

How the city recognizes volunteers

City appreciation events

Each year, the City of Waterloo thanks program and neighbourhood volunteers. Registered volunteers receive an annual invitation to available activities.

Examples of past activities include:

  • free swim or skate passes
  • art or craft workshops
  • pickleball session
  • gift cards to local businesses

Community Builder Award

The Community Builder Awards celebrate volunteers who give their time to City of Waterloo and affiliate programs. Each April, during National Volunteer Week, we share their names in the Volunteer Salute.

Learn more about milestone pins, nominations, and the Volunteer Salute on the Celebrating our volunteers page.
