The city's noise bylaw sets out standards for different types of noise.

General rules from the noise bylaw

The rules include:

  • persistent noise is prohibited at all times
  • yelling, shouting, and loud voices are prohibited from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. (9:00 a.m. on Sundays)
  • residential renovation noise is prohibited from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. (9:00 a.m. on Sundays)
  • commercial construction noise is prohibited from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. (all day on Sundays and holidays)

Noise bylaw exemptions

October 24 to November 4 2022 at 24 Union Street East

Notice is hereby given that an application is being made to the Director of Municipal Enforcement Services for the City of Waterloo for an exemption to the City of Waterloo Noise By-law #2010-073 which prohibits noise from construction equipment between the hours of 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The applicant, Karla Zelaya, is requesting an exemption as follows:

To permit commercial construction noise at 24 Union Street East from 6:30 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. on one day between October 24, 2022 - November 4, 2022.

October 27 2022 at BMH Green

Notice is hereby given that an application is being made to the Director of Municipal Enforcement Services for the City of Waterloo for an exemption to the City of Waterloo Noise By-law #2010-073 which prohibits amplified sound between the hours of 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The applicant, Arist Xu, is requesting an exemption as follows:

To permit sound through speakers and people speaking from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. on October 27, 2022, to take place at BMH Green at 200 University Avenue West.

June 6 to October 28 2022 at 308 King Street North

Notice is hereby given that an application is being made to the Director of Municipal Enforcement Services for the City of Waterloo for an exemption to the City of Waterloo Noise By-law #2010-073 which prohibits amplified sound between the hours of 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The applicant, Luis Matos on behalf of Prica Global Group, is requesting an exemption as follows:

To permit sound through excavation machinery, crane operations, truck engines, parking noise, and any other noise related to a construction site Monday through Friday on specific days from June 6th, 2022, until October 28th, 2022 to take place at 308 King St. N, Waterloo.

Apply for a noise exemption

  1. Download and complete a noise exemption application (PDF).
  2. Submit forms in person at city hall at least 60 days before the exemption is requested to begin.
  3. Pay the applicable fee. We accept cash, debit, credit, cheque or money order (playable to the City of Waterloo).
