Aging well Waterloo directory released to community
A new directory, Aging Well Waterloo, has been released to the community. This informational directory for Waterloo older adults contains information about housing, home support, health services, recreation and leisure, ethnic and cultural supports and much more.
The new directory is available in the Feb. 21 issue of the Waterloo Chronicle and can also be picked up at the City of Waterloo facilities including Waterloo City Centre at 100 Regina St. S. and our community and recreation centres including RIM Park Manulife Sportsplex, Albert McCormick Community Centre, Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex and senior centres including the adult recreation centre at 185 King St. S. and the Wing 404 located at 510 Dutton Dr. An online version of the directory is also available.
As a member of the World Health Organization’s age-friendly communities network, the City of Waterloo is committed to providing resources that help its older adults to live an active, independent and engaged lifestyle. In January, 2010, the city’s age-friendly Waterloo multi-agency committee was formed with the support of the mayor to collaborate with the community and local partners, including the University of Waterloo, on ways to foster healthy and active aging in Waterloo.
Through engagement opportunities, such as the annual mayor’s forum on an age-friendly city, a number of findings and priorities were uncovered and presented to Waterloo council in the form of a report. The report formed a baseline for the city and also included an action plan to assist the city in becoming a community that fosters healthy and active aging. One of the recommendations from the committee’s action plan was to develop a "one-stop-shop" directory of program and services for older adults in Waterloo. As such, the Ageing Well Waterloo Directory was created to respond to this need.
