City of Waterloo announces return of in-person events for summer 2022
The City of Waterloo is pleased to announce the return of in-person events, beginning this month.
“Festivals and events bring people together to celebrate the vibrancy of Waterloo,” says Mayor Dave Jaworsky. “We are excited to welcome in-person events back to the City and encourage residents and visitors to explore all that the community has to offer!”
Key festivals to look forward to this summer include:
- Open Streets (June 11): Willis Way will transform into a community event space! Come watch live performances and mural painting, explore the art market and join in on the fun and games.
- Canada Day (July 1): Be part of Waterloo’s giant community picnic. Enjoy an afternoon of music, art, activities and a drone show at dusk.
- Day of Play (August 6): Come have a Day of Play! Located along the Waterloo Park Promenade, there will be activities, games, adventures and more.
- Lumen (September 24): See public spaces in a new way while exploring the interplay of light, art, and technology in installations throughout Uptown Waterloo.
Monthly programs also taking place this summer include:
- Art Market (May to August): Browse through a wide selection of handmade items created by local artists, crafters and makers while listening to live music in Waterloo Public Square.
- Night Lights: A Pop-Up Series (May to August): Presented in partnership with Waterloo Public Library, this series of small pop-up shows around Waterloo features different activities ranging from stargazing to storytelling.
- Campfire (May to October): Bring a blanket or your favourite hoodie and head to Waterloo Public Square! Gather around the campfire for live music, games and more.
- Movies in the Park (May to September): Head to Waterloo Park to enjoy a mix of recent releases and classic films during this series, presented in partnership with Princess Cinemas, Fresh Air Films and the Beat Goes On.
In addition to city-run events, the City of Waterloo is excited to announce the return of other community favourites, including Afrofest by the African Women's Alliance of Waterloo Region, Sun Life Uptown Waterloo Jazz Festival, Sun Life Financial Waterloo Busker Carnival, Royal Medieval Faire and the Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre Pow Wow.
To keep participants safe, the City of Waterloo will continue to work closely with the Region of Waterloo’s Public Health team to ensure each event follows public safety protocols and procedures.
City of Waterloo events are delivered by Create Waterloo, the City of Waterloo’s arts and culture unit and are supported by a wide range of sponsors, partners, collaborators, artists, organizations and volunteers.
