The council summary below provides a snapshot of the major items presented at this council meeting. Please refer to the minutes for an official record of the meeting.
2018 review of museum operations
Council received an update on the successful operations of the City of Waterloo Museum. Now in its 10th year of operation, the local museum exceeds provincial averages in terms of number of total visitors it receives in a year and number of visitors per week. Remarkably, the Museum is able to achieve this despite the fact the number of hours it is open is less than the provincial average. Staff is busy planning an eventful year to mark the milestone and started by launching a new logo and a look back on previous collections, through social media. A number of collaboration are planned for the year. Council also approved $15,000 to support the Museum’s anniversary events as well as the 100th anniversary of the Pierce Arrow truck, which is a cornerstone part of the Museum’s collection. Highlighting the Museum’s celebration will be an exhibition focused on Joseph E. Seagram and the legacy of Seagram in Waterloo, and a tour involving the classic 1919 Pierce Arrow truck.
Formal public meeting
Zone change application Z-18-12, The Incorporated Synod of the Diocese of Huron, 400 Northfield Drive W
Council approved a zone change application for 400 Northfield Drive West following a formal public meeting. The site is currently developed with a church, surface parking and landscaped areas. The new development will see a new church constructed on the eastern portion of the site, which is currently vacant. The existing church will be demolished and the western portion of the site will be developed with stacked townhouses. A landscaped amenity area is planned next to Northfield Drive West and increased setbacks will be provided along the north side of the property – adjacent to existing homes. Surface parking will be provided for both the residential and church portions of the redevelopment.
