Council approves significant investment in city’s green spaces

Council has approved investing a total of $2.2 million on projects that will see a new leash free dog park created, as well as major enhancements to Waterloo Park.

The city will invest $228,000 to create a second leash free dog park, this one to be located in the west side employment lands.

The Waterloo Park Circuit project will see the construction of an interior perimeter walkway in the west end of the park. The project design and public engagement commenced in 2021, and the first phase of construction is planned to start in the fall of this year. This first phase of the construction will include completing a section of the circuit, including the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over Laurel Creek, as well as upgrades to the Bauer Lot, including the relocation of the existing operations yard from the Bauer Lot. The cost of completing those three projects is $1.9 million.

Another $136,000 will be used to develop an Urban Forest Strategy, which will advance the city towards the goal of promoting and maintaining a sustainable and healthy urban forest tree canopy throughout the city.
