Waterloo supports resident mobility during construction detours

Council received a report for information from staff regarding the creation of guidelines to improve communications for construction projects involving temporary disruptions and detours to roads, trails, pathways and sidewalks. Recognizing the impact on resident mobility that these detours present, staff consulted Grand River Accessibility Advisory Committee, Waterloo Advisory Committee on Active Transportation and Age-Friendly Waterloo to identify best practices to inform and assist pedestrians, cyclists and people using mobility devices when construction causes these disruptions. The best practices will be piloted and evaluated in the 2024/2025 construction season, and include communication tools, accessibility considerations for all paths of travel related to the project, and supplementary physical accessibility standards for in and around construction areas.

City releases funds to support renovations at Albert McCormick Community Centre and WPL McCormick Branch

Council approved the release of $1.5M to support the renovation and expansion of the Albert McCormick Community Centre (AMCC) and WPL McCormick Branch. The goal of the project is to reconfigure and expand the facility to meet the present and future needs of the local community. This project compliments the AMCC Energy and Accessibility Retrofit project already underway. The energy and accessibility retrofit, with the support of a $2.4M Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program grant from Infrastructure Canada, will implement energy efficiency measures, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance accessibility at the facility. These projects combined,  will create new opportunities for programming and services. The design concepts under consideration for the renovation will be refined and brought back to Council before being finalized.
