Waterloo will pilot Vote at Home for 2026 municipal election

In 2026 the City of Waterloo will pilot a new initiative to support voting at home for those that cannot attend a poll in person due to illness, injury or disability. Voters unable to attend a voting location in person can also assign a proxy to cast their ballot. The vote at home pilot will provide an additional option for those who may prefer not to assign a proxy.

To encourage voter turnout, Waterloo will also continue with the popular supervote locations, and extend advance voting hours over the Thanksgiving weekend. Supervote locations allow any eligible voter in the City of Waterloo to cast their ballot. This enables voters to vote at a location more convenient to them and provides an additional option to the local polling station. Advance voting on Thanksgiving weekend has also been popular, providing an opportunity for those who attend school in other cities to vote while at home for the holiday weekend.

Council approves amendments to support continued housing development

City of Waterloo council continues to support development and complete communities. Council approved official plan and zoning amendments to support construction of 170 new residential units (58 townhouse units and 112 stacked townhouse units) in northwest Waterloo, near the intersection of Erbsville Road and Conservation Drive. The development is designed to be walkable with trails and walkways connecting to future sidewalks, and parkland, and is within a 15 minute walk of transit, two schools and a commercial plaza.

Council also approved zoning changes to support a new 6-storey apartment building on Westhill Drive. The building will have 140 units in a mix of one and two bedrooms.
