City of Waterloo recognizes the legacy of Dr. Ron Schlegel

City of Waterloo council and staff extend condolences to the family, friends and many colleagues of Dr. Ron Schlegel, whose remarkable contributions as an entrepreneur, educator, philanthropist and community builder have left a lasting impact in our community.

As a professor at the University of Waterloo, Ron played an important role in the development of health studies and gerontology, helping to strengthen the connection between academic research and the well-being of our community. His dedication to improving the lives of older adults continued through his work with Schlegel Villages and the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging.

His entrepreneurial spirit, commitment to learning and remarkable generosity extended across many sectors, from agriculture and urban development to health care, including mental health and addiction care through Homewood Health Centre. He will be remembered as a community builder who helped make Waterloo Region a stronger and more connected place.

“Ron was a true barnraiser in Waterloo Region, and his legacy is one of innovation, compassion and a commitment to community,” said City of Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe. “His contributions to urban development, mental health and healthy aging continue to have an impact in Waterloo. On behalf of everyone at the City of Waterloo, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ron’s sons, their families, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”
