City of Waterloo seeks new tenant for Carnegie Library building

The City of Waterloo seeks a new tenant to occupy the Carnegie Library building located at 40 Albert Street, in uptown Waterloo.

The Carnegie Library is an iconic building of historic and architectural significance, located in uptown Waterloo, in proximity to the Waterloo Public Library, Waterloo Park and the Communitech Data Hub. With three floors, and a total leasable floor area of 463.4m2, the Carnegie offers an opportunity in a highly visible, prestigious location. The city anticipates a new tenant will be able to occupy the building in summer of 2021.

Upcoming renovations to the building including adding an elevator, removing interior walls and upgrading the building to current building code standards. The space will be open concept and flexible for future users.

“Waterloo has a strong history of entrepreneurship, innovation and collaboration, and we are excited to offer this unique space to local businesses and organizations,” states Kristin Sainsbury, senior economic development officer. “Local hubs and accelerators bring together multiple interests under one roof, and the Carnegie Library is a welcome addition, supporting creativity and growth in Waterloo.”

The Carnegie Library is intended to support a range of uses, including office, institutional arts, or cultural uses that will foster innovation, research, or creative arts industries, and further enhance the vibrancy of the uptown core.

Businesses, not-for profit groups, academic institutions and/or collaborations of groups interested in the Carnegie building are encouraged to submit an expression of interest. The city encourages organizations whose work or mandate will contribute to the economic vibrancy of the uptown core and further the goals and objectives outlined within the City of Waterloo’s 2019-2022 strategic plan.

Interested parties can preview the space and ask questions of staff during one of three public open houses scheduled as follows:
