City of Waterloo wants to know: how will speed limit options for residential streets, or paid on-street parking in Northdale impact you?

The City of Waterloo wants to hear from residents this month about options for speed limit changes on residential streets, and proposed paid on-street parking in the Northdale neighbourhood.

As part of the speed management program, the city is looking to reduce speeds on class 4 and 5 (local and minor collector) residential roads and in school zones. There are two options proposed:

  • Option A: 40 km/h speed limit on residential roads with 30 km/h school zones
  • Option B: 30 km/h speed limit on residential roads and in school zones

To help understand the personal travel impacts of these changes, the city has an online tool available to estimate travel time under both options. The tool allows you to enter your starting point and your destination, and then shows three estimated travel times, comparing existing conditions, Option A, and Option B.

In addition to a survey open to all residents for feedback, the project team is also consulting with area transportation professionals. Detailed project information, the estimated travel time tool and feedback survey are available at www.engagewr.ca/speed-management. The survey will be open through April 4, 2022.

The city is also looking to hear from those in and around the Northdale neighbourhood to provide feedback to help us develop options for paid on-street parking. We want to hear from Northdale residents, students, local businesses, the post-secondary institutions, and all visitors to the area, to better understand current parking use in the area, and how a paid on-street parking program would impact users. Paid parking spots would be painted on the streets where there are legal parking spaces, and parking would be available for purchase up to 3 hours at a time, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Detailed information about the potential paid on-street parking program (which will involve all the existing on-street parking currently in the area) and a feedback survey are available at www.engagewr.ca/northdale-parking. The survey will be open through April 1, 2022.
