City temporarily closing part of Princess Street to facilitate street dining

The City of Waterloo will temporarily close Princess Street, located between King and Dorset streets, on July 9 to motorized vehicles to create a people-friendly space and enable on-street dining served by local businesses.

The two-month closure is supported by the Uptown BIA. It is also aligned with the city’s Active Transportation focus. Picnic tables will be added.

“When businesses saw what was happening on Willis Way, they quickly reached out to suggest another great opportunity on Princess," said Ward 7 Councillor Tenille Bonoguore. “Thanks to their advocacy, and to quick work by city staff, we are creating another new people-friendly space in the core, where people can enjoy the warm summer months and support local business – all with appropriate distancing."

The city had earlier announced that a portion of Willis Way, from Caroline Street to the Rainbow crosswalk. will also be closed to motor vehicles beginning on July 8. It will also have picnic tables available for passive use.

“Uptown has long been home to excellent eating establishments and I know people will come down and take advantage of this unique dining opportunity. These people deserve our support,” added Mayor Dave Jaworsky.
