Waterloo looking at potential to relocate City of Waterloo Museum to historic uptown Carnegie Library

Council approved the detailed design phase of the project looking at whether the historic Carnegie Library building at 40 Albert Street could be a suitable permanent location for the City of Waterloo Museum. The City of Waterloo Museum currently operates from leased space at Conestoga Mall, and faces challenges related to limited exhibition space, storage capacity, and programming flexibility. In 2024, a feasibility study assessed the potential for transforming the Carnegie Library building into a museum. The study proposed a renovation strategy that respects the building’s heritage features while integrating modern accessibility and sustainability standards, including the addition of an elevator and a reconfiguration of the building’s three storeys for storage, programming, and exhibition use. Council approved advancing the project to the detailed design phase, which will refine cost estimates, confirm storage strategies for the museum’s growing collection, and explore phasing opportunities, while giving staff time to pursue potential external grant funding and partnerships.

City of Waterloo Council approves amendments to support 185 unit development

City of Waterloo Council continues to approve applications and support development, approving the official plan and zoning bylaw amendments at 354 King Street North. The new 24-storey apartment building will advance housing in the City and provide 185 residential units, with 277 bedrooms (112 one-bedroom units, 54 two-bedroom units, and 19 three-bedroom units). The development includes 636 square metres of commercial space, 2,700 square metres of amenity area, 186 parking spaces and 118 bicycle parking spaces, with access from both King Street and Regina Street.
