Committee volunteers report on their work to help shape the City of Waterloo

Committee Night is an annual opportunity for Committees of Council to provide an overview of their activities from the previous year and what they plan for the year ahead. Dozens of volunteers gathered in Council Chambers to share their important committee contributions to City work.

Members of the Waterloo Economic Development Advisory Committee, Age-friendly Advisory Committee, Sustainability Advisory Committee, Town and Gown Committee, Municipal Heritage Committee, Creative Sector Advisory Committee and Grand River Accessibility Advisory Committee presented their work in 2025. This work included advising Council and staff on:

  • economic development and tariff response;
  • naturally occurring retirement communities and the City’s Age-friendly Action Plan;
  • green building and high performance development standards;
  • international student supports and student food security;
  • protecting and preserving public and private historic buildings and cultural sites;
  • connecting with local artists, and the City’s Culture Plan renewal; and
  • the City’s Assisted Snow Clearing Program, universal washrooms and sensory rooms.

Future work for committees includes:

  • evaluating AI opportunities and supporting the future hospital build plan;
  • continuing the annual Senior of the Year and Ride-a-Bus programs;
  • guiding the sustainable evolution of Uptown Waterloo’s public spaces;
  • ongoing community building with the post-secondary population;
  • supporting the need for development alongside heritage preservation;
  • continued work on the City’s Culture Plan/Creative Sector Strategy; and
  • work on an Inclusive and Accessible Recreation and Leisure Programming Report.

Volunteering on a City of Waterloo committee or advisory group is one of the ways residents can get involved and make a difference. Thank you to all our volunteers who assist Council and staff in strengthening Waterloo as a diverse and inclusive community!
