Council Statement: Diwali

The following statement was read during the November 6 Council meeting.

This year, November 12 marks the celebration of Diwali — one the biggest and most important holidays of the year for millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. This five-day Festival of Lights celebrates good over evil and human resiliency. For some it is also a connection to harvest time and celebrations for the New Year.

We wish ‘Happy Diwali’ to our friends and neighbours, celebrating locally at RIM Park and throughout the City, but especially to the thousands of students who are settling in this community from India away from their families. Sharing well wishes and smiles, and admiring beautiful Rangoli on the sidewalk in front of a house are easy ways to make connections.

Across cultures light is a symbol of understanding and idea connection. The unrest and suffering right now in many parts of the world challenges us to recognize humanity and reach for peace.
