Diwali/Deepavali
Diwali (also known as Deepavali) is the Festival of Lights, inspired by the row of lights often lit outside of homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.
Families, friends and neighbours gather during Diwali to exchange gifts and sweets, share delicious meals and admire fireworks. People decorate their homes with lights, diyas (oil lamps) and rangoli – beautiful designs made using colourful rice and flower petals.
Diwali celebrations across Waterloo are a beautiful contribution to the diversity of our community. To everyone celebrating, we appreciate the light you bring to Waterloo every day. We're glad you're here.
This festival is a reminder to all of us to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
