Eight Waterloo students win the 2023 Council for a Day contest

The Council for a Day contest has returned after a three-year pause, inspiring a wave of Grade 5 students to share their thoughts to make life in Waterloo even better. The winning students will present their ideas at the State of the City on April 27 and spend the day with Mayor McCabe while serving as Council for the day.

All of the submissions offered a youth perspective on how to improve the quality of life in Waterloo, with many of the ideas emphasizing the importance of sustainability, safety and accessibility.

“It’s fantastic to see the enthusiasm and excitement of students who really care about this city. Youth civic engagement is so important," shares Mayor McCabe. “I can’t wait to spend the day with the young mayor and councillors to hear more about their ideas for Waterloo.”

  • Ward 1 councillor Aadarsha A. from Northlake Woods Public School
  • Ward 2 councillor Norman L. from Vista Hills Public School
  • Ward 3 councillor Ruby H. from Northlake Woods Public School
  • Ward 4 councillor Norah W. from Lester B. Pearson Public School
  • Ward 5 councillor Shaun S. from Lexington Public School
  • Ward 6 councillor Norah O. from École élémentaire L'Harmonie
  • Ward 7 councillor Otis B. from Elizabeth Ziegler Public School

Note: Winners were assigned wards for the purpose of the contest, which may not reflect where they live or attend school.

The 2023 State of the City will take place on Thursday, April 27, 2023, from 7 to 9 a.m. The event is hosted by Rotary Waterloo and proceeds are in support of The Working Centre. Ticket sales end Wednesday, April 19. Purchase tickets at rotarywaterloo.ca
