Emancipation Day

On August 1, the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect and abolished slavery in Canada.

It is a time to honour the resilience of those who endured and resisted slavery and to recognize the ongoing impacts of that history today. The legacy of slavery continues to shape systems and structures, and Black communities across the country still face racism and inequality.

As we celebrate the sense of freedom and liberation this day brings, we also renew our commitment to fostering inclusion and working to eliminate anti-Black discrimination.
