International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a day for celebration and reflection.
In Waterloo, we recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Grand River Accessibility Committee (GRAAC). Members of GRAAC have enriched our community by identifying and overseeing the removal of barriers for people with disabilities in Waterloo and across the Region. Their commitment to inclusion benefits us all, whether we're disabled or temporarily able-bodied.
Beyond GRAAC, disabled people continue to advocate and educate. A lot has been accomplished, but there is still so much to do. We reflect on the impact of ableism and the many barriers that continue to keep disabled people from participating fully at work, school, play and in civic life.
Today, we re-commit ourselves to the long-term work of creating an inclusive and accessible community where everyone can participate, contribute, belong and thrive.
