Juneteenth

Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in the fight to end slavery in the United States, commemorating the day the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced in Texas on June 19, 1865. While it began as a U.S. commemoration, many Black communities in Canada observe Juneteenth to honour the shared history of slavery, freedom and ongoing struggles against anti-Black racism.

Juneteenth serves as a time for Canadians to reflect on our own history of slavery, Black migration and systemic racism, as well as to celebrate Black culture, resilience and achievements.
