K-W Little Theatre and the City of Waterloo launch improvised soap-opera: All Around the Square

Starting March 10, weekly episodes of Soap Opera: All Around the Square will be available to enjoy online, performed by Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre (KWLT).

All Around the Square is an improvisational soap-opera drama inspired by classic radio dramas. Filmed in vignettes, episodes will be released each Wednesday and are created through improv, influenced by the viewer’s ideas. Viewers are encouraged to join in on social media before each episode airs to share words and ideas that will guide the next episode. The performers will take those prompts and create the show available to watch Wednesdays in March (released on the 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st).

Taking theatre to the next level, these performances are script-free, socially-distanced, and completely improvised. The plot takes place in a modern-day Waterloo during pandemic times, with a quirky dramatic twist. The cast from KWLT are performing together virtually each week during the series and episodes will be released as they are created. The videos of the show will be shared online to watch through IGTV and YouTube. Episodes can be equally enjoyed by listening from your favourite podcast app of choice.

About KWLT

Founded in 1935, KWLT is Kitchener-Waterloo's oldest theatre and is entirely volunteer run.  KWLT’s theatre space, at 9 Princess Street East in Waterloo, has been closed to the public since the beginning of the pandemic. While their physical theatre has been closed, KWLT has shifted to online productions, including the improv soap opera All Around the Square, and are planning on hosting additional online content and workshops in 2021.

KWLT also released the first episode of their Black Box Radios series with Elizabeth Carey’s “The Tragedy of Mariam,” online in partnership with Midtown Radio on November 1st.
