Knowledge integration exhibition
The newest City of Waterloo Museum exhibit highlights its collaboration with the University of Waterloo’s Department of Knowledge Integration to host selected student exhibitions for a four-month period over the next three years.
What: Knowledge Integration Exhibition
Where: City of Waterloo Museum, located at Conestoga Mall (near the food court)
When: March 26 to May 31, 2019
The Knowledge Integration program, known affectionately as “KI,” attracts students who are curious, engaged, and intrinsically motivated learners. Through core courses and disciplinary breadth and flexibility, it teaches students to value diversity, embrace ambiguity, collaborate effectively, solve complex problems, and care about their impact on the world. These exhibits are the products of the three-course Museum Sequence, culminating in a group design project for KI students.
Museum exhibit design is a great example of applied knowledge integration. In second year, student designers study museum exhibit design and the ways people learn. Students travel to a major European museum for 10 days, immersing themselves in the culture, and studying museums and their visitors first hand. In third year, students work in small teams to develop, design, and build exhibits based on a topic of interest to them. Three of five student exhibits are selected for display, with the following themes:
BEYOND THE BIN: RECYCLING IS CHANGING. WHAT DO WE DO?
MASHKAWIZII: PAINTED ORANGE: TRAUMA AND RESILIENCE
SHADY AID: SHINE A LIGHT ON VOLUNTEERING ABROAD

Museums contribute to the knowledge economy. Sharing the City of Waterloo Museum’s goals, and providing meaningful engagement with our collection encourages students to consider the important role community museum’s play, and how they give vitality to local culture. The museum contributes staff expertise and resources to optimize the level of design delivery of the student’s exhibitions.
The City of Waterloo Museum recognizes the efforts the Knowledge Integration department museum curriculum offers students with its creative and unique learning experience.
