Louis Riel Day 2025

Today, we honour Louis Riel, a courageous Métis leader and founder of the Province of Manitoba. His advocacy for Métis rights and vision for inclusion left a lasting impact on Canada and continues to inspire generations.

Louis Riel’s leadership is remembered not only for shaping Manitoba’s entry into Confederation, but also for his unwavering commitment to justice, for which he gave his life on November 16, 1885.

In Waterloo, we recognize the heritage, culture and contributions of Métis people in the community and across the country. As we reflect on Riel’s legacy, we commit to advancing inclusion and social justice in the spirit of his vision.
