Lumen aims to light up the city with art and technology (1)

The City of Waterloo invites community members to celebrate uptown Waterloo at our newest festival, Lumen, a celebration of light, art, and technology. Taking place throughout uptown, the festival will feature 30+ installations from local and internationally renounced artists.

Lumen will run from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. on September 28 in a mix of indoor and outdoor locations throughout uptown. This free festival offers installations, performances and community art from local artists and community partners.

“This festival is a partnership between a diverse and accomplished group of organizations in the region and a celebration of the amazing artistic talent in our community,” said Justin McFadden, executive director of economic development at the City of Waterloo. 

Strong partnerships with organizations include Christie, University of Waterloo (Institute for Quantum Computing and Faculty of Arts), Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, Centre for International Governance Innovation, Waterloo Public Library, City of Waterloo Museum, THEMUSEUM, Button Factory Arts, LAUNCH Waterloo Canada Learning Code, and Mary Allen Studio Tour.

Notable installations from artists include:

• see your face projected onto the moon in AMASS by artists Jackie Levitt and Jonah Kamphorst  (Erb St and Caroline St. intersection)
• experiment with balloon-struments inspired by the 2018 Lumen Kid Koala performance with the Waterloo Tape Music Club (Centre for International Governance Innovation)
• rock out with Kazoo! Festival and their killer line-up of indie and avant-garde musicians (Waterloo Public Square)
• experience wonder with Heavy Meta, a 9 meter long, metal, fire breathing dragon (Waterloo Public Library)
• witness as Waterloo City Centre is transformed with the interactive styling of VERSA with their installation, Megaphonic

Lumen is delivered by Create Waterloo, the City of Waterloo’s arts and culture unit. The festival is supported by a wide range of sponsors, partners, collaborators, artists, organizations and volunteers.
