Lumen Festival illuminates uptown Waterloo with interactive art installations

The City of Waterloo invites residents and visitors to immerse themselves in a world of light, art and technology as the popular Lumen Festival returns on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

This vibrant and interactive event with over 30 cutting-edge installations promises an awe-inspiring experience for all, showcasing the imaginative works of both local and international artists.

Taking place in city spaces throughout uptown Waterloo, Lumen transforms the city into a canvas of innovation and creativity, while also serving as a hub for artists to push the boundaries of their craft. Attendees are encouraged to actively participate in the creation of these captivating displays, engage in the transformation of public spaces and even collaborate on artworks that blur the line between spectator and artist.

This year’s event will feature several installations premiering in Lumen, including Trumpet Flowers, a large-scale artwork by the Sydney, Australia-based artist studio, Amigo & Amigo. The event will also feature The Black Hole Experience by Age of Union, Kelly Nunes and Dax Dasilva, presented by the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo. The Lumen festival will also be in new locations this year, with installations at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics for the first time.

“We are thrilled to once again host Lumen, Waterloo’s festival of light, art and technology. This event, which brings together stunning light installations and groundbreaking creativity is a true testament to the vibrancy of our community,” says Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe. “We look forward to sharing the incredible work of talented artists, whose vision and ingenuity illuminate our city.”

The City of Waterloo is committed to access for all and has made the event entirely free and open to the public, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the magic of light and art.
